On March 8, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) and Ghent University’s Global Campus signed an MOU for a joint Ph.D. program. The two universities also agreed to exchange students and scholars, and conduct joint research in biological sciences. The ceremony took place at KU’s administrative building, and was attended by KU President Heeyoung Song, Dean of the Graduate School Jaiwon Ryou, Dean of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology Choonghwan Lee as well as Ghent University’s Global Campus President Jozef Vercruysse and Professor Arnout Van Messem.Founded in 1817, Ghent University is Belgium’s top notch university and one of Europe’s leading universities in research. The university is particularly competitive in biotechnology. Its Professor Marc Van Montagu received the World Food Prize for his achievements in founding, developing, and applying modern agricultural biotechnology in 2013. Professors Dirk Inzé, Yves Van De Peer, and Jiri Friml ranked top 10 among the most frequently cited professors in plant sciences by Labtimes, and Professor Nico Callewaert was among the Nature Biotechnology’s “Top 20 translational researchers.”Ghent University’s Global Campus is located at the Incheon Global Campus, a joint collaboration by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Education, and Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority to host distinguished universities around the world. It was the first European university to join the Incheon Global Campus. Opened in September 2014, Ghent University’s Global Campus currently offers undergraduate programs in molecular biology, environmental technology, and food technology, and is expected to add master’s programs in the future.
