On March 14, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that eleven engineering departments from its College of Engineering, College of Architecture, College of Information and Communications, and College of Life and Environmental Sciences have been accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea for ten consecutive years. The College of Engineering, in particular, is KU’s largest undergraduate college with 90 faculty members and 2,500 students. Under the theme of creativity and innovation, the college strives to train students in innovative and future-oriented thinking. It has four major plans for development, including specialization by selecting leading academic fields, maximization of partnerships between academia and the industry through technology transfer, capacity development of chief technology officers by innovative engineering education, and improving research and educational environments. In addition, the Center for Innovative Engineering Education at KU was established in 2007 to train engineers in various areas, such as IT and design, according to the demands of the private sector. The center is composed of the Research Institute for Engineering Education and the Taskforce for Engineering Education. The research institute ensures that engineering programs comply with the changing demands and accreditation standards, and proposes new ways to train creative and specialized engineers. On the other hand, the taskforce provides multidisciplinary and specialized education. For example, a course titled “Art and Engineering Design” was introduced to improve problem-solving skills of engineering students. The taskforce also holds a “Creative Design Camp” during the vacation as well. The New Engineering Building, which began construction in November 2014, will house research labs with cutting-edge technologies when it will be completed by July. The environmentally friendly, twelve-story building occupies an area of 25,000㎡, and will become the largest building in KU’s history. KU President Heeyoung Song said he hopes it will bring academic achievements for not only the College of Engineering, but also the KU community as a whole.
