The recent Go match between Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo and Lee Sedol has brought a heated debate on the future of education among universities. With the advances in artificial intelligence, they are contemplating how to educate students in a rapidly changing environment. Against this backdrop, Konkuk University (KU) is putting a strong emphasis on integrated science and technology based on its traditionally strong biosciences and information and communications technology fields. In 2017, KU plans to establish the Center for Integrated Science and Technology to encourage creativity in promising industries. The center will include four departments in biotechnology and another four departments in engineering, and the departments will focus on new technologies that receive policy support, such as drones, driverless cars, and development of new drugs. Through the center, a “4+1 bachelors and master’s degree program” will also be offered. Furthermore, KU is expected to introduce the Sanghuh College of Bioscience. In 2010, KU introduced the “Bioscience Education Cluster” that promotes collaboration among the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, College of Life & Environmental Sciences, College of Bioscience & Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Medicine, KU Veterinary Medical Hospital, Graduate School of Medicine, KU Medical Center, and Institute of Biomedical Science & Technology. To further increase synergy, the bioscience-related departments at the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, College of Life & Environmental Sciences, College of Bioscience & Biotechnology will be integrated in to the new undergraduate college. With 300 students and 50 faculty members, it will become the country’s largest undergraduate college in the field, and the curriculum will be revamped to support interdisciplinary studies and joint research. KU President Heeyoung Song said, “Research on both pure science and applied science will be conducted at the Sanghuh College of Bioscience, which will become an institution for a new-level of interdisciplinary studies.”
