To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Konkuk University (KU) will hold various special events throughout the year.
Academic Events
The “KU Bio International Symposium” and “KU Bio Festival” will be held on May 10 and May 11, respectively, at the New Millennium Hall. Nobel Laureate Roger Kornberg, Dr. Peter Wright of the Scripps Research Institute, Professor Mario Amzel of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and University of Michigan Professor Fei Wen will join KU professors to discuss recent developments and the future of biological research at the symposium. KU Professors of bio-industrial technologies, environmental health science, systems biotechnology, and veterinary science are expected to participate in the event held on the following day with the goal of increasing synergy among different academic fields through collaboration.
In June, Department of Digital Culture and Contents will invite renown scholars from Europe, including French sociologist Michel Maffesoli of the Paris Descartes University, to hold an academic seminar titled “Beyond a Creative Economy: The Source of Creativity and its Use.” The participants will discuss a policy agenda suitable for the Korean society.
KU’s Institution for International Development Cooperation will also hold the “Workshop on Advancing Palestine’s Bio Industry” at the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology on September 6. In 2014, KU has established a research center at the Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron as part of an ODA project by the Korea International Cooperation Agency. Through the center, KU has been transferring technologies needed for disease and epidemic control, genetically engineered plants, and improved livestock productivity.
Cultural Events
On the other hand, KU will also host a variety of cultural events. Two 8-minute films will be screened by projecting light on the New Millennium Building from 7:30 p.m. on May 9 to May 13. The general public would be able to see the video from the road between Konkuk University and Guui subway stations nearby. The first film, named “Synesthesia I,” is a visual image of a collection of auditory elements in outer space, such as signals from planets. The second film, “Synesthesia II,” is an animation inspired by sounds. Professor Jiho Shin of the Department of Film and Animation, who organized the screening said, “The films were produced to symbolize KU, which continually provided knowledge to the Korean society for 70 years.”
During May 9-15, a special screening of films by Director Sang-soo Hong, who is also a professor at the Department of Film and Animation, will be held at the KU Cinematheque located on the first floor of the Art and Design Building. Of the 17 films directed by Mr. Hong, nine will be shown starting from “Like You Know it All,” which was released in 2009.
