Nineteen members from KU:flower, a Konkuk University (KU) student activity group, joined a guerilla gardening event in Cheonggyecheon on May 20, 2016. Guerilla gardening involves planting flowers and trees in neglected areas to beautify communities. Jungmin Kwon, an environmental planning student and the leader of the group, received the Konkuk Magnolia Award for her contribution with various guerilla gardening activities at the ceremony celebrating the university’s 70th anniversary recently. The event was organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation. A total of approximately 100 people, including employees at Amore-Pacific and Korea Urban Forestation Company as well as Seoul citizens, participated. As part of the event, KU:flower members made “plastic bottle gardens,” “tire gardens,” “gardens in the air,” and “terrarium garden” using recycled materials near Mojeon and Gwangtong Bridges.“It was an extraordinary experience because we were able to use recycled bottles and tires to plant a wider variety of flowers,” said Ms. Kwon. “The event was especially meaningful as we were able to not only give joy to people through flowers, but also relay a message on environmental protection.”KU:flower is planning to decorate the fence around KU:L House, the student dormitory, using recycled cans this coming Wednesday.
