On April 18, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that students from the Department of Internet and Mulitimedia Engineering won the grand prize in the “KT Smart Car Contest.” The contest was held in March as part of a joint program by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Creative Economy Initiative, and National Information Society Agency to create an environment supportive of smart cars based on IoT and big data. The ‘HEART team’ composed of four KU students won the prize by submitting a system that applies driving habits. The team members stated “We are satisfied that we were able to go beyond completing the task and could actually bring changes to the lives of people.”After introducing an open application programming interface last December so that individuals and corporations could use car-related big data for free, KT held the contest to seek out ideas for new business opportunities. Ten teams were selected following highly competitive preliminary and final rounds over two months. To five of the non-corporate teams, the company provided education and training on entrepreneurship in the process. KT is expected to make investment decisions toward award recipients based on technology, marketability, and contribution to the public interest. Teams that have been selected for investment will be paired with KT divisions for approximately six months and receive coaching on launching the businesses and collaborate on marketing. Mr. Jaeho Song, a senior executive at KT, said “Based on the 10,000 connected cars that resulted from collaboration with the government, KT will support the commercialization of smart car-related firms.”
