On June 30, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that Professor Sang-Gi Min of the Department of Bioindustrial Technologies will become its 20th president starting on September 1 and serve a four-year term. Of the three candidates nominated by a 49-member committee comprised of faculty, students, and staff, KU’s executive board appointed Professor Min, who received the highest number of votes by the committee.Professor Min campaigned under the slogan, “Opening 100 Years of Konkuk with Tradition and Innovation.” He shared his vision for KU becoming a private university widely respected by the Korean people and a creative and innovative research university. He also emphasized creating value through cooperation with the industry as well as employment and entrepreneurship. “I will fulfill the vision of KU’s founder so that the university could produce graduates with high integrity and professors devoted to research will be respected, said Professor Min. “Through effective communication and collaboration in the university’s administration, KU will lead in global initiatives and the community will be united in spirit.”Professor Min received his doctorate degree from Universität Hohenheim. In 1995, he became a professor at KU and had served as the president of the professors’ association and dean of the Graduate School. Currently, Professor Min is the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and leads the university’s Program for Industrial Needs-Matched Education, also known as the PRIME project. In addition, he is the president of the Institute of International Development Cooperation, which was established in 2014 as one of the first institutions among Korean universities to transfer agriculture-related technologies to developing countries in Central Asia and the Middle East.
