On July 5, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that it was approved for the “2017 Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP)” by the National Institute for International Education. The government invites international students for undergraduate and graduate education in Korea through the program, and participants receive funding for language training, tuition, medical insurance, and airfare as well as monthly stipends. As a result of the approval, KU will be accepting government-sponsored students in addition to degree-seeking and exchange students from abroad.
KU plans to recruit KGSP students starting this year for admission in 2017. The approval for the program is valid for two years, and will automatically extend to the 2018 academic year. KGSP students at KU will receive up to 5 million won in scholarships for tuition each semester.
Previously, KU was certified for the International Education Quality Assurance System by the National Research Foundation of Korea. In 2015, along with 81 other undergraduate-degree granting higher education institutions, both KU’s main campus in Seoul and Glocal campus in Chungju were certified according to various criteria, such as valid immigration status, diversity, health insurance, Korean- or English-proficiency of international students as well as financial assistance and on-campus housing provided. As such, the universities receive incentives in visa applications and extension of approval for part-time employment in addition to preference for the Global Korea Scholarship program by the Ministry of Education.
