On July 5, 2016, Konkuk University (KU) announced that Mr. Gyu Dong Shim and Ms. Ji Su Kim of the College of Architecture received honorable mention for the “Paris Pavilion: The Art of Peace” competition, which was organized by Archasm in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in the city. Among the ten honorable mentions, the proposal by KU students was recognized for not only innovative and aesthetic design, but also the use of public space surrounding the pavilion to enrich communities.“I deepened my understanding of the tragedy in Paris through the process, and it was very meaningful to visualize social issues and concepts,” said Mr. Shim. “I was able to experiment in various ways on how to transform abstract vocabulary, such as sadness, mourning, and pace, into architecture, and I focused on inspiring empathy from people.”A total of 324 proposals from students and architects around the world were submitted during February-June, and the jury included renown European architects, Raphael Bouchemousse, Cédric Petitdidier, and Adrian Welch. The top 50 proposals can be viewed on Archasm’s website, blog, and Facebook page as well as Indian architecture magazines.
