Konkuk University announced that it ranked 59th among Reuter’s Top 75 most innovative universities in Asia. Out of the 75 universities, 22 were based in China and Korea and Japan had 20 each. In addition to Konkuk, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and Pohang University of Science & Technology were included in the list.
The media and financial data agency identified higher educational institutions that are “doing the most to advance science, invest new technologies and help drive the global economy” by using data from its Intellectual Property & Science division on academic papers and patent filings. The two indicators were chosen as they demonstrate basic research and interest in protecting and commercializing its discoveries, respectively. Once approximately 150 organizations were chosen, each was evaluated based on how often patent applications were granted as well as how often they were cited. In addition, the survey also looked at how often research papers were cited by patents and the percentage of articles that featured a co-author from the industry.
