Konkuk University announced that Professor Jung-Hun Woo of its Atmospheric Information Systems Lab had participated in the Scoping Meeting for the Methodology Reports to refine the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. Established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization, the IPCC reviews and assesses information related to climate change. During its 43rd session recently, the IPCC decided to update and supplement the guidelines, which assist countries in compiling reliable estimates of their emissions and removals of greenhouse gases. The scoping meeting for the update took place in Minsk on August 29-31, 2016.
Professor Woo was nominated and selected to be part of the meeting based on his research and expertise. Among the 110 participants, Professor Woo and Dr. Jong-bu Lim of the National Institute of Forest Science were the only Koreans. The methodology report is expected to provide supplementary methodologies for sources of greenhouse gases from new technologies or production processes as well as updated default values of emission factors and other parameters. It will also elaborate and clarify the existing guidelines, which “contain critical information that will form the basis for emission reduction targets and affect national industrial and energy outlooks” according to the professor.
Professor Woo also manages Konkuk’s graduate program specializing in climate change, which is supported by the Ministry of Environment. In 2014, Konkuk University’s Department of Environmental Engineering was chosen with four other universities to participate in the program. As a result, it receives KRW 750 million over five years to raise and train experts as well as promote collaborative research in the field.
