On December 16, 2016, students of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)-Konkuk University (KU) master’s program in agricultural processing and marketing received their diplomas. In 2015, the Institute for International Development Cooperation at KU was selected to provide education and training in the field as part of an official development assistance project by KOICA. Twenty students from 13 countries—Afghanistan, Algeria, Bolivia, Cameroon, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Uzbekistan, and Timor Leste—enrolled in the program. They were previously civil servants at both the central and local government level as well as public research institutes in their respective countries. For three semesters, the students took classes at Konkuk University while participating in internships at the National Institute of Animal Science, National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Seoul Dairy Cooperative. They were actively involved in research, and Juan Javier Quino Luna, a Bolivian student, won a prize from an academic symposium organized by the Korean Society for Food Engineering. For their fourth and final semester, students will be returning to their respective countries to write their master’s thesis. Once completed, they will receive their master’s degree in agronomy or business management. The ceremony, which was held at the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, was attended by KU President Sang-Gi Min and KOICA Director Tae-yeon Kwon. “KU will continue to fully support the program as well as similar ones to become a globally competitive university,” said President Min in his congratulatory remarks. “I hope that what the students have learned in Korea will contribute to agricultural policies in respective countries.”
