On November 3, Konkuk University President Sang-Gi Min presented on how Korean universities could raise creative and multidisciplinary students at the Global HR Forum 2016. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, Korea Economic Daily, and Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, the forum, which is in its 11th year, was held at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas under the theme of “Let’s Dream, Challenge and Create." More than 2,000 participants from both public and private sectors in approximately 60 countries joined the event.
During the panel session on “Education Reform for the Future,” President Min gave a presentation titled “A Model for University Education: Raising Creative and Multidisciplinary Students.” The panel was moderated by Sunggi Baik, Professor Emeritus of Pohang University of Science and Technology, and other presenters included UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and Distinguished Professor Emeritus Kyung Chan Min of Yonsei University. By using examples of innovation in education, they discussed how universities could nurture creative talent using projects and experiences.
In his presentation, President Min mentioned that higher education in Korea remains tied to the past. Curricula cannot meet the society’s needs and universities can only admit a fixed number of students for each major. They also face obstacles in offering interdisciplinary studies. He then introduced Konkuk’s FIT program and PLUS-Semester system as well as the Konkuk Institute of Technology to the audience. He emphasized that “students should become well-versed in aesthetic appreciation, cultural diversity, creativity, strategic and comprehensive thinking, technical knowledge and practical skills and Korean universities should play a critical role in creativity becoming a driving force for the economy.”
