From May 21 to June 3, government officials from Solomon Islands were invited by Konkuk University’s Global Agricultural Development Center to receive training on improving market accessibility in the agricultural sector. As part of a three-year fellowship program by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, a total of 16 officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock visited Konkuk this year for the second time. They are to incorporate lessons learned from Korea’s experience into policies on agricultural processing, distribution, and inspection systems to increase the income and enhance the quality of life of farmers in their home country.
This year, the officials visited Canaan Farmers School to study poultry farming and the history of Korea’s agricultural development, and receive leadership training. They then visited a farm operated by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, Ttonatta Dairy Farm, and Garak Market in Seoul. The officials attended lectures on recent developments in organic animal feed, dairy and meat consumption, policies on storage and processing of agricultural products, and advancing animal husbandry through cooperatives.
“Through this year’s training program, we hope to find measures that will improve the agricultural system in Solomon Islands and apply them in a practical manner,” said Professor Doo-Hwan Kim of the Department of Bioresources and Food Science, who also heads the Global Agricultural Development Center at Konkuk University. “By building a strong network between Korea and Solomon Islands, we hope to jointly promote development projects in both the public and private sectors.”
