On December 18, 2017, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) announced that Professor Hyung-seok Kim and Professor Hyeon-wook Jin of the College of Information and Communication were listed among 238 experts who will implement Top 100 future technologies that will be the engine growth of Korea by 2025.
120 specialists having in-depth knowledge in industry-university-research institute collaboration participated in the ten-month-long selection process which began in February 2017. They based their selections on the future vision of a growing, smart, sustainable, healthy and safe society and developed a classification system by industry for underlying technologies which can be employed to realize the vision. Then they chose technologies which can be commercialized and greatly contribute to industrial development and young researchers and engineers who will play a pivotal role in introduction and improvement of such technologies by 2025.
Professor Kim was selected thanks to his research on visual sensor and cognitive technology using multi-sensors which provides realistic experience without complicated equipment. This technology will be helpful not only in popularizing virtual reality (VR) but also in creating an emotional network for users by ultimately combining time and space of both reality and virtual reality.
Professor Jin was recognized for his research on multiple core-based ultra-high performance scalable OS technology which is expected to enhance the performance of parallel calculation and big data processing performance. The technology will allow us to strengthen the software competitiveness of Korea, to conduct simulations for a range of the basic science field and new industry, and to address issues that the nation is faced with.
The total number of experts selected was 238 who have been working in universities and companies. By university, Seoul National University produced 20 experts, followed by KAIST and Korea University turning out 8 and 6 leaders respectively.
