Konkuk University (KU) placed 15th in the JoongAng Ilbo’s comprehensive university rankings for 2017. On October 23, 2017, the JoongAng Ilbo, celebrating its 52nd anniversary, released its list of 61 top comprehensive universities in Korea. KU, scoring 169 points out of 300, named 15th best university, following Seoul National University, which topped the list. KU, remaining at last year’s spot, ranked 13th among comprehensive private universities, except for public universities, in Korea.
Especially, KU, earning 164 points, took the 5th place among universities offering four-year degrees in programs in humanities and arts, following Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea University and Hanyang University. According to the JungAng Ilbo, KU received a favorable evaluation thanks to its notably strong support system for students, a very low drop-out rate of 2.2 percent, a high graduate employment rate and exceptional performance of students.
KU’s social science departments ranked 12th behind Seoul National University, Hanyang University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Kyung Hee University, Ewha Woman’s University, Yonsei University, Chung-Ang University, Sogang University and Inha University.
Furthermore, in national science and engineering, KU placed 16th and 17th, respectively.
The JoongAng Ilbo assessed 61 four-year universities by classifying the universities into comprehensive evaluation and program evaluation categories. In terms of comprehensive evaluation category, 61 universities providing four-year degrees in four or more programs in humanities, social science, natural science, engineering, medicine and arts were evaluated and those running specialized programs such as KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) were excluded.

The JoongAng Ilbo judged universities by using 33 performance indicators.
The performance indicators that are grouped into four areas are as follows:
a. Faculty research (10 questions, 100 points)
b. Learning environment (13 questions, 100 points)
c. Performance of education and students (6 questions, 70 points)
d. Reputation (4 questions, 30 points)
