On September 28, 2017, Konkuk University (KU) announced that KU delegation discussed ways to foster interuniversity cooperation and exchange, including student exchange programs and joint research, with Hong Bang International University (HIU), a prestigious Vietnamese partner university, and opened a regional office at HIU.
The opening ceremony held in Hong Bang Tower Main Auditorium was attended by approximately 500 people including KU President Saggi Min, government officials from the Ministry of Education, and 200 students from the Department of Korean Language of HIU.
In the congratulatory remarks, KU President Sanggi Min said “Through the regional office, I would like to continuously help more smart Vietnamese students to become global talent playing leading roles in the upcoming 4th Industrial Revolution by studying in Konkuk University.
HIU President Thai Ba Can noted “HUI will constantly promote exchange of students and university professors through the regional office which will act as a stepping stone for more active exchange between two universities”. Then he added: “HUI will take a leap to become a more prominent private university by learning from Konkuk University” in his welcoming speech.
During his trip to HUI, KU President Sanggi Min had an in-depth discussion on ways to enhance the cooperation between KU and HUI with the CEO of Nguyen Hoang Group (NHG) and a chairperson. In addition, he actively sought ways to develop partnership with NHG by visiting Him Lam Campus of International Schools of North America and UK Academy Ba Ria; Ba Ria-Vung Tau University (BVU), members of NHG.
Hong Bang International University (HIU) is a leading private university located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and partner university of KU Glocal Campus. Since 2012, KU and HIU have exchanged four students every year and fifteen KU students participating in the KU-HIU International Winter Program visit HIU during winter break. They are planning to further strengthen the partnership by running a degree program for HIU students studying Korean language and “2+2 Student exchange program”.
KU delegation also visited Ton Duc Tang University (TDTU), one of the top public universities in Vietnam. TDTU, established twenty years ago, is a rapidly growing university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. With 25,000 students, TDTU has been successfully collaborating with industry which can be proven by its graduate employment rate of 99.3 percent. Furthermore, TDTU has an eco-friendly campus and excellent student support facilities and was ranked first in fiscal self-reliance in Vietnam.
After explaining KU’s recent achievements, KU President Saggi Min stressed his wish to recruit bright Vietnamese students studying natural sciences or engineering to KU.
TDTU President Le Vinh Danh showed keen interest in the curriculum and effective system of the Department of Golf of KU Glocal Campus as the demand for and interest in golf teaching are going up among Vietnamese people in recent years. He also asked for continuous cooperation in relation to this issue from KU.
KU delegation and TDTU staff exchanged opinions on creation, curriculum, and student selection process of the Department of Golf which is under discussion.
During the visit, KU delegation visited TDTU library which was modeled on Harvard University’s library and student support facilities. According to a staff member of TDTU, TDTU library with which students are quite satisfied is equipped with a range of facilities for developing students’ creativity, under the theme of “INSPIRE”.
Through this trip, KU took the initiative in the education market of the southern part of Vietnam that numerous Korean universities are competing to take the leadership. Particularly, KU created an environment for more proactive and tangible interaction between KU and HIU by establishing the regional office in Vietnam.
