The American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) Midwest Section honored Konkuk University (KU) alumnus Yun-hwan Kim, with the Outstanding Young Researcher Award. He, Class of 1994, has been working as an assistant professor at Purdue University.
The ASAS, founded in 1908, is an authoritative non-profit professional organization for the advancement of livestock, companion animals, exotic animals and meat science. The organization annually holds meetings for its Western, Southern and Northeast Sections. Dr. Kim became the first Korean to win an award at the event hosted by the ASAS.
Dr. Kim earned his bachelor’s degree in animal products science from KU and served as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Davis. He received his master’s in food science from Kansas State University and doctorate in food science from Texas A&M University. He also worked as a postdoctoral research associate in a muscle biology group at Iowa State University and as a Senior Scientist at AgResearch (New Zealand Government Research Institute).
As an assistant professor of the Department of Animal Sciences supervising students in the Muscle Biochemistry and Meat Processing Lab at Purdue University, Dr. Kim has been conducting research on formation and functional traits of protein, peptide, metabolite existing in meat.
Dr. Kim has been actively working with food science and animal science organizations both at home and abroad. Since 2016, he has been serving as an Overseas Honorary Researcher at the National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration, Korea.
