Konkuk University (KU) is speeding establishment of infrastructure to take a leap toward a bioscience research-centered university.
To lay a foundation for education and research in line with college restructuring of bioscience-related colleges, including the College of Sanghuh Life Science and the KU Center for Convergent Science and Technology, KU began constructing the “KU PRIME Bioscience Lab” in June last year and held a completion ceremony on February 23, 2018.
The lab covering 249 pyeong (823.140496㎡) located on the 8th floor of the Animal Science Building consists of a nutritional resource processing lab, an experimental animal breeding room, and a vacant room for future use.
The nutritional resource processing lab was built for animal feed experiments and practical exercises. Experiments which used to be conducted in the animal feed processing lab, located on the basement level and 5th floor of the Animal Science Building, will be carried out in the newly-built lab. The lab is composed of an animal feed grinding room, an animal feed processing room, an animal feed safety examination room and cold storage. Particularly, they minimized the chances of contamination by making students pass through an air shower into the Lab and created a clean and safe environment for students by setting up an automated air ventilation system and an air-conditioning and heating system.
They also built the experimental animal breeding room by renovating the old experimental animal breeding facility which used to be situated on basement level of the Life Science Building. The room is divided into six separate breeding rooms, a cleaning room, an operating room, and a waste storage room in order to facilitate stable experimental animal breeding by improving the environment.
“KU is becoming a bioscience research-centered university equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment both in name and reality by opening KU Center for Inter-University Research Facilities for Technology, the KU Center for Inter-University Research Facilities for Bioscience, and the KU PRIME Bioscience Lab. As biotech industry plays a pivotal role in the era of fourth industrial revolution, these new facilities will be of immense help to students in performing experiments and practical exercises,” said KU President Sanggi Min.
