Department of Biological Engineering

Biological engineering is a field which studies engineering technologies utilizing knowledge gained from research on living organisms in order to assist people in their daily lives. Together with IT and nanotechnology, biological engineering is presently one of the most prominent academic fields.

The Department of Biological Engineering at Konkuk University (KU), founded in 1967, has acquired an extensive pool of knowledge of fields which deal with living organisms including biochemistry, industrial microbiology, biochemical engineering, fermentation technology, microbial culture technology, bioenergy engineering, proteome recombination genetic engineering, molecular cell biology, nano bioengineering, as well as the design and practice of biotechnology. Based on this extensive knowledge, we are able to foster highly skilled biological engineering professionals capable of working in fields related to advanced biological engineering, as well as in industries that utilize living organisms.

The objective of the Microbial Technology Major is to foster the development of outstanding engineers required in 21st century bio industries, with specializations in the fields of bioprocess engineering, biomedicine engineering, bio-energy, bio and fermented food, and bio materials. The department provides specialized education on manufacturing practices in industries related to biological engineering, as well as management standards and legislation on living organisms in the context of bioprocess engineering, a structural element mandatory for specialization in related fields. Such specialization allows our graduates to take on important leading roles both home and abroad in the development of society and industry as expert researches or engineers. In short, the department's objectives are as follows.

  1. Foster engineers able to take on leadership roles in academic and research fields related to bio-process engineering.
  2. Provide the creative, practical knowledge and expertise required by engineers based on a fundamental knowledge of the natural sciences.
  3. Provide education that allows students to naturally acquire a sense of ethics, honesty and global mindset.
